چکیده

Economic Integration and Labor Market Institutions: Worker Mobility, Earnings Risk, and Contract Structure This paper investigates the effects of labor market integration, in the form of worker mobility, in a model with long-term labor contracts that lead to wage rigidities and unemployment. Reflecting the interdependence of regional labor markets, we develop a general-equilibrium framework where the contract structure is simultaneously determined in all regions. It is shown that increased mobility leads to more flexible labor market institutions in which firms can more easily vary the level of employment in response to fluctuations in demand. Economic integration is potentially Pareto-improving but, in the absence of a system of compensation, workers are harmed by greater labor mobility while the owners of firms benefit from higher profits. Earnings Mobility in Europe: 1994-2001 Do more flexible labour markets experience a higher earnings mobility?

The economic reality of the 1990s in Europe forced the labour markets to become more flexible. Using a consistent comparative dataset for 14 European countries, the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), we explore the evolution and the cross-national differences in earnings mobility across Europe between 1994 and 2001 from three angles: first, the evolution of short-term inequality and its...

Trade , Earnings , and Mobility −

Using a large longitudinal data set, we study the effects of increased trade on earnings and mobility in the Swedish labor market in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Earnings respond significantly to changes in industry sales, whether generated by domestic market forces or international trade: Swedish exports (imports) raise (lower) annual earnings, but changes in trade affect earnings just as a...

Labor Market Mobility and Expectation Management: Evidence from Enforceability of Non-compete Provisions

This study examines how managers’ use of expectation management is affected by labor market mobility, measured with the enforceability of non-compete provisions in employment contracts. We find that managers in states with stricter non-compete enforcement are more likely to manage analyst expectations downward, consistent with labor market immobility exacerbating managers’ incentives to ensure ...

Did the Housing Price Bubble Clobber Local Labor Market Job and Worker Flows When It Burst ?

We integrate local labor market data on worker flows (accession and separation rates), job flows (creation and destruction rates), employment levels, and earnings with MSA-level data on housing prices and local area unemployment, in order to study the local labor market dynamics associated with the U.S. housing price bubble of the late 2000s. We proceed to study the magnitude and timing of the ...
